BDO Canada buys GrantMatch to boost grants advisory
BDO Canada has acquired government grant advisory firm GrantMatch, adding a specialist team and a software platform that tracks thousands of public funding programmes.
The deal brings GrantMatch into BDO Canada's Credits & Incentives group. BDO stated that the transaction expands its grants and incentives services across the country.
GrantMatch advises organisations on government grant opportunities and supports the development and submission of applications. The firm began in Ontario in 1994 under the name FairTax Recovery Consultants Limited.
Client Base
GrantMatch's client base includes large corporations, municipalities, non-profits, and small and medium-sized businesses. In 2025, the firm stated it supported more than 1,000 clients across the public and private sectors.
The firm works with more than 130 municipalities across Canada on funding for community infrastructure and local initiatives. It also focuses on incentives for industrial sectors including manufacturing, food and beverage processing, aerospace, forestry, and clean technology.
GrantMatch has worked with RBC since 2021 through RBC's Services Beyond Banking programme. GrantMatch said that the collaboration connected RBC business customers with funding opportunities.
What Changes
Mike Janke, Managing Partner at GrantMatch, will join BDO Canada as Partner, Tax. BDO stated that Janke will continue to lead and grow the practice within the firm.
BDO confirmed that all 35 GrantMatch team members will move to BDO Canada as employees within the Credits & Incentives group. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Technology Platform
GrantMatch brings a proprietary software platform that tracks more than 10,000 government programmes across federal, provincial, and regional levels. The platform includes a program matching algorithm and underpins client tools that include the GrantMatch Hub and the Funding Assessment & Strategy Tool.
The GrantMatch Hub is a software-as-a-service product aimed at Canadian small and medium-sized businesses. GrantMatch said the tool offers ongoing matches to programmes based on a customer profile.
GrantMatch said its Funding Assessment & Strategy Tool has been used by RBC business customers since 2021. It said more than 20,000 RBC business clients have used the tool to identify grant opportunities. The company also said more than 1,500 SMEs have used the GrantMatch Hub since its 2022 launch.
Market Context
Professional services firms have expanded advisory practices around tax credits, incentives, and grants as clients face a growing number of programmes and application requirements. Companies often seek support on eligibility, documentation, and submission processes, particularly when programmes target specific sectors or regional priorities.
BDO described the acquisition as a way to expand its Credits & Incentives service line and add grant advisory services alongside its existing work on tax credits.
"On behalf of BDO Canada, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the GrantMatch team, its customers, and partners," said Rachel Gervais, Managing Partner, Tax, BDO Canada. "This deal has enabled the firm to expand its Credits & Incentives capabilities, making it easier to help our clients access the funding they need so they can continue to grow their businesses without having to worry about the complex nature of government funding."
BDO stated that GrantMatch will join the Credits & Incentives group, expanding the range of services available to clients. It added that clients will also gain access to the wider tax credit services delivered by the group.
GrantMatch's offering blends advisory work with software tools. The firm said its platform assists in the identification of suitable programmes and connects clients with grant opportunities across multiple levels of government.
Janke noted that the combination with BDO significantly increases the scale of GrantMatch's reach.
"We built GrantMatch on a foundation of trusted, client-focused services and a unique, proactive approach to funding," said Mike Janke, Managing Partner of GrantMatch. "Joining BDO Canada means that we can scale much faster, while remaining true to our original mission of solving global challenges by connecting organizations to government funding."
BDO stated that it has operated in Canada for more than 100 years, providing accounting, assurance, tax and consulting services. GrantMatch is based in Oakville, Ontario, and serves clients across North America.
The integration places GrantMatch's technology products and advisory team within BDO's national practice, with Janke leading the unit as a partner in BDO's tax business.
