Sapiens has appointed Maroun S. Mourad as Chief Executive Officer for North America. He will also join the company's Senior Leadership Team.

Mourad brings more than 27 years of leadership experience across insurance, reinsurance, data analytics and technology, spanning property and casualty, life and annuities, and international markets.

The appointment gives Sapiens a new regional leader for one of its most important markets, as North American insurers face pressure on underwriting, claims, customer service and regulatory compliance.

Before joining Sapiens, Mourad was President of the Intellectual Property division at Clarivate. Earlier, he spent a decade at Verisk, where he served as President of Global Claims, Global Underwriting, Life and International, and was a member of the company's Senior Operating Committee.

Earlier in his career, he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Zurich Insurance Group's Middle East business. He also held senior leadership roles at Arch Reinsurance, AIG and Gen Re across the US, the UK and Europe.

Sapiens, a supplier of software and services to the insurance sector, said Mourad's background spans both insurance carriers and the technology and data businesses that serve them. That combination is central to the company's North American strategy as insurers increase spending on system upgrades and automation.

Market pressure

North American insurers have been grappling with tougher operating conditions, including claims inflation, more frequent severe weather events, rising customer expectations and increased scrutiny of pricing and compliance. Those trends have driven demand for systems that support underwriting, claims handling and policy administration through better use of data.

Against that backdrop, Sapiens is reshaping its leadership in the region. It is seeking to strengthen its position with insurers reviewing legacy technology estates and considering wider use of artificial intelligence in core operations.

Paul Wheeler, Chief Executive Officer of Sapiens, outlined the rationale for the hire.

"North American insurers are under more pressure than ever to move faster, price risk more accurately and serve customers better," said Wheeler. "Maroun has spent his career leading exactly that kind of change, at carriers, at reinsurers and at the data and software businesses that serve them. His depth across software, AI and data makes him the right leader to scale our North America business."

The company did not disclose financial terms related to the appointment.

Career path

Mourad's career has spanned several parts of the insurance value chain, from underwriting and claims to reinsurance and analytics. That breadth is likely to matter for Sapiens as software suppliers face pressure from insurers to show practical returns on technology spending rather than broad transformation promises.

His academic background in law and political science also stands out in a sector where regulatory scrutiny remains a major concern, particularly in personal lines and consumer-facing operations. Mourad holds a Juris Doctor and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from U.C. Berkeley.

For Sapiens, North America is a key competitive market for established insurance software providers, consulting firms and newer technology entrants. Leadership appointments in the region can signal how vendors intend to position themselves as insurers weigh the pace of legacy system replacement and the adoption of AI tools.

Mourad linked his move to the pressures facing insurers and to Sapiens' existing customer base and technology offering.

"Insurers in North America face rising complexity and customer expectations, and they need partners who deliver measurable gains in accuracy, productivity, growth and compliance," said Mourad. "Sapiens has the platform, the AI capability and the customer base to do that. I look forward to working closely with our teams, customers and ecosystem partners to turn that opportunity into tangible results."
