Alation has formed a strategic data governance partnership with PwC Canada, starting with a compliance product for Canadian banks.

The first offering, an E-21 Compliance Accelerator, is designed for federally regulated banks responding to the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions' Guideline E-21 on data risk management. It automates critical data element classification, data lineage tracing, and audit evidence generation.

The partnership combines Alation's data governance software with PwC Canada's regulatory advisory and implementation services. PwC Canada will deliver the joint products as the main delivery partner.

Both companies are targeting sectors with heavy compliance demands and a strong need for audit trails in daily operations. Financial services is the initial focus, with healthcare and other regulated industries on the roadmap for later offerings.

The E-21 product addresses a rule that raises expectations for how banks identify, manage, and monitor data risk. The system is intended to reduce preparation time for compliance reviews by producing evidence packages that can be used in audits.

Early deployments at Canadian financial institutions have already produced complete evidence packages ahead of the guideline's September enforcement deadline. Work that once took months can now be completed in days, according to the companies.

Compliance focus

The move reflects rising demand among banks and other heavily regulated organisations for tools that can document data controls in a repeatable way. Boards and senior management teams face increasing scrutiny over governance, operational resilience, and the quality of data used in reporting and risk management.

For consulting firms, the market has shifted from one-off remediation projects to embedded systems that support continuous monitoring. Software suppliers, meanwhile, are trying to show that automation can strengthen governance work without weakening oversight.

PwC Canada said the partnership is intended to turn its regulatory experience into repeatable products that can be applied across sectors. "PwC Canada has been helping financial institutions navigate complex regulatory change for decades. This partnership builds on our existing technology capabilities by accelerating how we operationalize that expertise at scale, enabling us to bring proven solutions to new industries and evolving regulatory frameworks," said Prithviraj Thakur, Partner and Data Management Practise Lead, PwC Canada.

Alation presented the arrangement as a way to embed its platform in compliance workflows where trusted data handling is essential. The company has built its profile in the data catalog and governance market and is now positioning its software more directly for regulated use cases.

Broader push

The Canadian banking rollout is the first formal product under the partnership, but additional solutions are in development for other regulatory frameworks and industries. This points to a broader effort to turn sector-specific compliance work into standardised software and consulting packages.

Such products could appeal to institutions trying to reduce the manual effort required to demonstrate compliance, especially where the same controls must be shown repeatedly to internal auditors, regulators, and external reviewers. In those settings, the burden often lies not only in doing the work but in proving it has been done and maintained over time.

Jonathan Bruce, Alation's Vice President of Global Partnerships, said the initial banking deployment would serve as a model for later industry offerings. "Data governance is becoming a board-level issue across every regulated industry," said Jonathan Bruce, Vice President of Global Partnerships, Alation. "PwC's domain expertise now has a technology platform that lets them accelerate time to value for their customers. We've proven the model with the E-21 accelerator, and we're just getting started."
