Emburse & Direct Travel link booking with expenses

Emburse and Direct Travel have formed a strategic partnership linking Direct Travel's Avenir platform with Emburse's expense management tools.

The deal is designed to bring corporate travel booking and expense management into a single workflow. Data from bookings, itinerary changes, payments, receipts and expenses will move between the two systems as trips unfold, rather than being exchanged only at limited points.

The companies are targeting a longstanding gap in business travel technology, where booking tools and expense systems often operate separately and require travellers and finance teams to complete manual steps after a trip ends. Closer integration should help organisations track spending earlier and respond to disruptions or policy issues while travel is still taking place.

Avenir is Direct Travel's travel management platform, built on Spotnana technology. Emburse provides software for expense automation, payments, policy controls and financial reporting for organisations managing business travel and broader employee spending.

The partnership centres on continuous data sharing between travel and finance systems. That includes live itinerary updates and booking activity from the travel side, alongside expense entries, payment information and receipt data from the finance side.

For corporate travel managers, the arrangement is meant to provide a clearer view of traveller activity, supplier use and programme performance. Finance teams would gain earlier visibility into travel spend and a tighter link between policy enforcement and reimbursement or reconciliation processes.

Shared data

The combined system will use information from each platform to trigger actions in the other. Travel data can automate parts of the expense process, while spending data can shape travel guidance and policy recommendations.

That could include automatically completing expense reports, synchronising travel, payment and expense workflows, and prompting employees based on live itinerary changes, internal policy settings and spending patterns. It could also help finance departments identify whether travel decisions remain within company rules before a trip is fully reconciled.

Business travel has been a focus for software groups trying to reduce administrative work and improve visibility into employee spending, particularly as companies seek tighter cost control. Travel disruptions and itinerary changes have also made real-time data more valuable for both travel managers and finance departments.

Emburse said the partnership would create a single layer of intelligence between travel and expense functions.

The joint approach is intended to preserve customer choice and flexibility by working within an open ecosystem rather than forcing organisations into a single closed stack. In practice, companies would continue to manage travel and expense through connected specialist platforms, with more data exchange and policy checks happening automatically in the background.

The aim is to move business travel management away from post-trip reconciliation and toward in-trip decision-making, using shared travel and spend data to give travel and finance teams a common view of what employees are booking, changing and spending worldwide.
