Lightspeed rolls out Mobile Tap for Quebec eateries
Lightspeed has launched a new mobile payments add-on for restaurants in Quebec, extending its Tableside ordering product with card acceptance on iPhone.
The add-on, called Mobile Tap, works with Lightspeed Tableside. It lets staff take orders and accept payments around the venue instead of moving back and forth to a fixed terminal. Lightspeed said it is responding to labour pressures in hospitality and customer expectations for faster service.
Mobile Tap attaches to an iPhone running Lightspeed Tableside and can also pair with iPad devices. It combines order taking and payment collection in a single workflow, which Lightspeed says reduces steps during service.
Payments on hand
Tableside payment has become a focus for restaurant technology vendors as venues look to shorten queues, speed up bill settlement, and reduce hand-offs at peak times. Mobile devices are also increasingly used for ordering and payment in full-service restaurants, bars, and high-volume venues.
Mobile Tap supports multiple payment methods, including insert, swipe, and tap, and works with major debit and credit cards.
The system includes integrated tipping and multilingual payment prompts. Lightspeed also says the device offers long battery life in a compact form factor.
Restaurants often need more complex bill handling than retail environments, particularly for groups and shared dining. Mobile Tap supports split cheques, including by seat or equal shares, for tableside settlement when guests want to pay separately.
Integrated workflow
Lightspeed says Mobile Tap connects ordering, payment, and reporting within the Tableside environment, allowing staff to take an order and close a bill without switching devices or systems.
The goal is to reduce time spent walking between tables and payment points and to lower the risk of errors when items are re-entered or cheques are adjusted at a terminal. Lightspeed said this approach can improve order accuracy and increase table turns during busy service periods.
Adoniram Sides, SVP of Hospitality at Lightspeed, said: "Hospitality moves quickly, and technology needs to move with it. With Mobile Tap, we're equipping restaurateurs in Quebec with a flexible and powerful solution that puts the entire transaction in the hands of staff, helping them serve guests faster, streamline operations, and drive revenue."
Performance claims
Lightspeed cited an internal analysis of European customers using Tableside, saying active users increased transaction volume by about 10% after adoption. The analysis covered 206 Europe-based businesses in 2025.
Transaction volume can be affected by many factors, including menu pricing, venue capacity, staffing levels, and seasonality. Lightspeed did not provide details on the types of venues included or how long businesses were tracked before and after adoption.
Mobile Tap expands Lightspeed's integrated payments offering in Canada, where regulation and consumer preferences can vary by province. For restaurants, support for insert and swipe can matter, especially for customers who prefer chip-and-PIN or who carry cards that do not support tap for higher-value transactions.
Broader footprint
Lightspeed operates a POS and payments platform for retail and hospitality businesses. Its customers processed about USD $90.7 billion in gross transaction value through its platform in fiscal 2024, across about 165,000 customer locations in more than 100 countries.
In Quebec, where service may switch between French and English depending on the venue and location, Lightspeed said Mobile Tap includes multilingual payment support integrated into the Tableside flow.
Mobile Tap is aimed at full-service restaurants and other venues with table service. Lightspeed said it plans to continue expanding its integrated payments ecosystem and adding tools tied to restaurant operations and checkout.
