Newland gains TSYS Level 3 nod for Android terminals

Wed, 4th Feb 2026

Newland Payment Technology has secured Level 3 certification on the TSYS Sierra platform for its PayExplorer payment application across its attended Android terminal range, extending its ability to deploy the software on TSYS-supported processing environments in North America.

The company said the certification covers Newland's attended Android devices including the N950 series, X800, and N750. Newland said these devices already have deployments across retail and food service settings in North America.

What Certified

TSYS certification checks that payment terminals and payment applications meet technical and security requirements for operation on the TSYS processing network. Newland said PayExplorer has completed Level 3 certification for processing on TSYS Sierra.

In card payments, certification can sit across several layers of the stack. It can involve the terminal, the payment application, and the connection to a processor. Newland said its approach means PayExplorer carries the required certification across a supported device portfolio.

ISV Impact

Independent Software Vendors often integrate payments as part of point-of-sale software used by merchants. In many deployment models, those software providers also take on certification work for a given processing platform and hardware combination.

Newland said its certification status changes that burden for ISVs when they deploy on the company's supported terminals. It said it will take responsibility for the payment certification and related compliance requirements tied to PayExplorer on these devices.

The company said ISVs can integrate with Newland software development kits and PayExplorer. It said this removes the need for ISVs to pursue TSYS certification work for deployments on supported Newland devices.

Newland also framed the change as a shift in compliance exposure for software teams. It said its model allows ISVs "to remain out of PCI scope" when they deploy on supported devices, because the company takes responsibility for meeting processing and security requirements at the platform level.

Deployment Model

In North American retail and food service, ISVs often manage complex estates of customer deployments. Those environments can span multiple store formats and device types. They can also involve frequent software updates and new customer rollouts.

Newland said platform-level certification reduces the engineering work and compliance overhead involved in expansion across those environments. It also said the approach reduces onboarding friction for new deployments.

In a comment, Heather Hatch linked the certification to the cost and complexity of payment approvals for software providers.

"This certification is a major step forward for Newland in North America. By taking responsibility for payment application certification and security through our platform, we're removing a significant barrier for ISVs - allowing them to stay out of PCI scope, move faster, and focus on delivering value to their customers," said Heather Hatch, Head of Solutions, Newland NPT.

Hatch also described the certification as part of a longer-term push in the region.

"It's a clear signal of our commitment to supporting ISVs long-term, with the scale, portfolio breadth, and technical depth they need to deploy with confidence," said Hatch.

Terminal Portfolio

Newland described its attended Android range as part of a cohesive terminal portfolio aligned with current PCI standards and Android specifications. The company positioned this portfolio as a base for "secure, modern payment deployments" in North America.

The company did not disclose commercial terms tied to PayExplorer deployments on TSYS Sierra. It also did not provide figures for the number of certified devices in the field. Newland said it has deployed more than 100 million terminals globally across more than 120 countries and regions.

Regional Presence

Newland said it has a growing team in Atlanta and has made recent senior hires in North America focused on ISVs, payment partners, and customers. It also said it plans to engage with the North American payments ecosystem through industry events, including NEAA 2026 in Boston.
