Sezzle has launched a virtual card in Canada, allowing eligible shoppers to use its buy now, pay later service at participating merchants online and in-store.
The rollout begins with in-store acceptance at retailers including SoftMoc, JD Sports Canada, QE Home, Mastermind Toys, West Coast Kids, Quarks, Kit & Ace, Popeye's Supplements in Ontario, Atlas Tools & Machinery, CLÉMENT and Hobbiesville. The card can also be used through digital wallets, including Apple Pay and Google Wallet.
The launch expands Sezzle's Canadian offering beyond its online instalment payment service, which has been available since 2020. The new card is backed by Marqeta, which provides the card-issuing infrastructure.
Eligible customers can add the virtual card to a mobile wallet and use it at merchants that accept contactless payments. More than 90% of Canadian retailers accept contactless transactions, giving Sezzle a broader path into physical stores without requiring merchants to build a separate integration.
Retail push
Sezzle is targeting merchants that want to offer instalment payments at the till and at online checkout. The launch is designed to help retailers capture sales from shoppers who want to spread payments over time in-store, on mobile and online.
QE Home is among the chains adopting the service across its estate.
"We've offered Buy Now, Pay Later online since 2020, and expanding it to all 75+ of our stores across Canada is about delivering the seamless omnichannel experience our customers have been asking for," said Christina Xu, Chief Executive Officer, QE Home. "We're proud to partner with Sezzle to bring flexible, no-interest payments into our physical stores - becoming one of the first specialty bedding retailers in Canada to do so."
Sezzle cited consumer research to support the store rollout. In a 2025 survey of its Canadian users, 74% said they were more likely to shop in-store if Sezzle was available.
Patrick Chan, General Manager of Sezzle Canada, said the virtual card broadens the company's reach in the country.
"The launch of our Virtual Card marks a major milestone for Sezzle in Canada," Chan said. "By enabling shoppers to use a Sezzle virtual card, we're dramatically expanding access to flexible payments. For merchants, this means incremental sales, higher engagement, and the ability to meet consumers where they are."
Canadian Market
Sezzle has recorded 1.9 million all-time user sign-ups in Canada and is nearing 7 million total orders in the market. More than 60,000 users in Canada have also signed up for Sezzle Up, its credit-building product.
Those figures suggest Canada is a significant market for the group as competition in buy now, pay later shifts from online checkout to physical retail. The launch also reflects a broader push across the payments sector to link instalment products to digital wallets and card rails, allowing providers to reach more merchants with less bespoke development work.
Marqeta said its system allows Sezzle to issue cards instantly, add them to mobile wallets, apply spending controls and track transactions in real time. According to the companies, that infrastructure already supports Sezzle's virtual card programme in the US.
Todd Pollak, Chief Revenue Officer at Marqeta, said the Canadian launch builds on that earlier work.
"Building on the strong momentum and demand we've seen for Sezzle's Virtual Card in the U.S., we're excited to bring this success to the Canadian market," he said. "Sezzle's commitment to advancing retail innovation, enabled by Marqeta's payments technology and expertise, makes this partnership a strong foundation for growth. Together, we're bringing Canadian shoppers more flexible payment options and helping merchants grow across both online and in-store channels."
